# People, roles and invitations

There are two levels of role. An **organization role** governs the organization. A **workspace role** governs a particular workspace. Giving someone access to one workspace does not give them access to all the others.

## Choose a role

| Role | Typical responsibility |
| - | - |
| Organization Owner | Billing, ownership, organization deletion, people and workspaces |
| Organization Admin | People, invitations, workspace management and organization settings; cannot delete the organization |
| Workspace Manager | People and settings in assigned workspaces, workspace connections and publishing |
| Workspace Member | Create videos and work with resources they can access |

Owners and Admins also act as Workspace Managers in every workspace. Only Owners and Admins appoint Workspace Managers. A Workspace Manager can manage members in their workspace but cannot promote someone to Workspace Manager or invite an outside person into the organization.

Roles and spending limits are separate. Someone can have permission to edit a video and still be unable to start a paid run because a credit limit has been reached.

## Invite someone

An Owner or Admin can invite from **People** or from a workspace's **Add person** action.

1. Enter the person's email address.
2. Choose their organization role.
3. Choose the workspaces they should enter and a role for each.
4. Send the invitation.

An invitation to a workspace also invites a new person into the organization. When they accept while signed in with the invited email, their saved workspace assignments take effect. You can give them no workspace initially and assign one later.

Pending invitations appear as invited. Owners and Admins can change the role or workspace access before acceptance, or revoke the invitation. A revoked or expired invitation cannot be accepted. If someone uses a different email address, invite that address instead of sharing another person's invitation link.

A Workspace Manager can add an existing organization member to their workspace. If the email is not in the organization, an Owner or Admin must invite it first.

## Joining through a company domain

Motion must approve a company domain and associate it with an organization. Verifying your own email does not give you authority to claim your company's domain.

Once the domain is approved, an Owner or Admin can configure automatic joining and choose the workspace roles new members receive. Assignments are per domain. There is no special public “default workspace” that everyone must enter.

Changing these defaults affects future domain joins; it does not silently replace existing people's assignments. An explicit invitation can provide different assignments. Removing or suspending a member is not undone simply because that person still has the company email address.

## Pause or remove access

Pausing a person's organization access stops them from using that organization's work. It does not delete their account or their work. Removing their membership also removes the access it provided. Check workspace assignments when restoring access rather than assuming all previous permissions should be restored.
